Cataract is a condition in which clear eyeglasses become cloudy. This can be likened to windows that are partially covered with dirt and cause visual impairment.
Treatment for cataracts is surgery to replace eye lenses. No medications, eye drops, exercise or glasses can cure cataracts.
When Recommended For Cataract Surgery (Surgery Replacing Eyeglasses)
Laser replacement surgery is recommended when:
- When clarity of view can no longer be corrected with glasses.
- Activities (work, hobbies, daily activities etc.) patients become distracted by visual cataract disorders
- When cataracts begin to interfere with the examination or treatment of patients’ eyes such as eye screening for diabetes.
Cataract Surgery Type
a) Phacoemulsification
It is a small cataract surgery (approximately 3mm). The lens is sucked out through a 3mm opening with the help of Ultrasound energy. Permanent lens implants are inserted into the lens bag in the eye.
b) Extra capsular cataract Extraction (ECCE)
Requires larger openings, approximately 7mm. The contents of the lens are removed, the lens implants are inserted into the lens bag through a larger opening compared to the Phacoemulsification technique.
